One week before Valentine’s Day, I made a 1:30 pm lunch reservation at Les Chauvins in Strasbourg through the restaurant’s own website, which clearly allowed bookings at that time. We drove approximately 1.5 hours to Strasbourg specifically for this reservation. We arrived in the city about 45 minutes early but encountered unexpected police street closures near the restaurant. By the time we reached the nearest parking garage, it was exactly 1:30 pm. I immediately called the restaurant, explained the situation, and asked whether arriving about 10 minutes late would be acceptable. I was explicitly told yes and encouraged to come over. As we were almost at the restaurant door, I received a phone call informing me that we would no longer be served because the kitchen was closed. When I pointed out that the reservation had been accepted for 1:30 pm and that we had traveled a considerable distance, I was told I could speak with the manager. The manager then refused to come out, saying he was too busy serving guests. This entire exchange took place while I was standing outside the restaurant. Beyond the inconvenience, the most disappointing aspect was the lack of accountability and basic courtesy. If the kitchen closes shortly after 1:30 pm, the restaurant should not accept reservations at that time—especially on Valentine’s Day. Accepting the booking, confirming a slightly late arrival by phone, and then refusing service at the door is simply not acceptable. Update regarding the owner’s response on Google: Instead of addressing these facts, the restaurant owner publicly accused me of lying and claimed that I was rude and aggressive toward his waitress. This is categorically false. My phone conversation with the staff member was calm and respectful, as is the tone of this review. She was polite and clearly following instructions from her manager, and at no point did I raise my voice or behave aggressively. I simply explained the situation while standing outside the restaurant. If I had been rude or aggressive, it is difficult to understand why I would have remained outside rather than entering the establishment. If needed, I can provide the call timestamps (13:32 and 13:41—the latter being an incoming call from the restaurant informing us we would not be served), as well as a receipt from another restaurant that closed at 14:00 yet still welcomed us at 13:45 without hesitation. The owner’s response appears to attempt to discredit the customer rather than acknowledge a clear organizational failure. I have lived approximately 1.5 hours from Strasbourg for over fifteen years, and this was not a case of a confused or disgruntled tourist. Unfortunately, the defensive and accusatory tone of the public reply confirms that the issue was not an isolated misunderstanding but a broader approach to customer service that lacks professionalism and accountability
